With school supplies and back-to-school clothing costing upwards of $300,
a free hair cut is nothing to split over:

That’s just what Darrell “Black” Graves thought when he organized an afternoon of free back-to-school haircuts for children younger than 12 at
Satin Wave Salon, 66446 Fond du Lac Ave.

“I know how expensive back-to-school can be,” said Graves, a father of
two and owner of Black Rose Productions. “And with the economy not
doing so well, some kids might not be able to get their hair cut.”

Eight area barbers gave haircuts to about 260 children on September 8.

“These people show us a lot of love,” said Will Collier, a barber who has worked at Satin Wave for two years. “It’s a way to give back to the community.”

Giving back is part of a long tradition at Satin Wave, which also gives free haircuts on Father’s Day and at various school career fairs throughout the school year.

“This is something that should’ve been here a long time,” Collier said of the event.

In addition, children got hot dogs and soda compliments of Bouchards’s Sportswear and All-Star Variety Foods.

“We get so caught up with money, sometimes we forget about families in need,” Graves said. “But at this time of year, a haircut is important for kids. They’re just starting school, and how you look sets your impression with people.”

Shelby Paine brought her three boys - Brandon, 12, BJ, 9, and Willie, 6 for
free haircuts. Her boys, she said, need haircuts every few weeks because
it grows so fast.

“Part of it is a style thing,” she said. “But also, you want them to look neat
and orderly. This really is unique, though. I’ve seen discount for kids and
stuff, but never free.”
