About 260 schoolchildren stopped by Satin Wave LTD, 6446 W. Fond du Lac Avenue, Sunday afternoon for a free haircut from one of the seven area barbers. The event was coordinated by Darrell “Black” Graves, owner of Black Rose Production Co. A father of two, Graves knows how expensive it is to send kids back to school each fall and wanted to give a break to parents who can’t afford the extras. In addition to a haircut, all the kids were treated to free soda and hot dogs, compliments of Bouchard’s Sportswear and All-Star Variety Foods. Ronnie Sherrill, who owns Satin Wave, donated his salon for the afternoon and took five with Journal Sentinel reporter Tania RuizdeLuzuriaga.

Q:Why did you decide to participate in this event?

A: To give something back to the community. A haircut makes kids feel better      about themselves. They also get to start school fresh. Who knows, this kid      might be a doctor one day, and then he’ll be serving me.

Q: How long have you been cutting?
A: I started in 1976. They called us the bicentennial barbers that year.

Q: Your business is well-know in the community. How long has it
      been here?

A: The shop has been here 40-something years. Three years here (on Fond      du Lac Ave.) and then over on Burleigh St. for years. My father passed it
to me. My grandfather worked there, too. It’s almost as old as Milwaukee      itself.

Q: So you inherited the business. Did being a barber come naturally?
A: Well, it was almost forced on me. I went to MATC and studied psychology.      Then, for a while, I wanted to become a preacher. Then I was going to      school during the day and worked at Globe Union at night. I got fired from      there, and so my uncle, who was a barber, told me to come work for him. I      haven’t looked back since. It’s been wonderful to me.

Q: Is there any key to longevity of your business?
A: I’ve been blessed.
